New Facility and Doubled Warehouse Space in Torsvik

With its new facility, Elgiganten Logistik has doubled its warehouse space in Torsvik. Their new warehouse is a unique structure, spanning over 89,000 square metres, constructed entirely from glulam timber. We are proud to say that BLS has delivered a bespoke warehouse solution here – complete with storage equipment for 25,000 pallet spaces.

Elgiganten faced a challenge in improving its warehouse management for kitchen products.

In the video interview, Josef Eriksson, Team Manager for Property and Maintenance at Elgiganten, talks about their challenge and the collaboration with BLS in creating their new warehouse designed specifically to handle kitchen products.

"Thanks to our previous experience with racking systems, we had some modifications and requests that we wanted to incorporate into this case, and BLS was able to meet those requests and deliver exactly what we needed.

For us, it was extremely important to find the best supplier for the protection solution we were looking for, as well as a local supplier to minimise transportation distances. Throughout the entire project, we’ve had very close and productive communication, which we have greatly appreciated."

Relocation from the Czech Republic to Jönköping

Relocation from the Czech Republic to Jönköping

To reduce environmental impact, Elgiganten decided to move its existing kitchen warehouse from the Czech Republic to Jönköping, with the goal of consolidating everything within the Nordic region. They required around 25,000 pallet spaces, and with a ready layout, they chose BLS to assist with designing and implementing the warehouse solution.

25,000 pallet spaces were delivered and installed in Elgiganten’s new warehouse in Torsvik. All columns were equipped with glide protection to prevent pallets from entering the rear column and to protect the first horizontal and diagonal beams. The columns, which are 11 metres high, feature a joint at 1.2 metres, allowing the lowest column to be replaced in the event of a collision, without the need to replace the entire column.

Specific requests were met

Specific requests were met

During the course of the project, specific requests from Elgiganten arose regarding clear colour coding for protective and safety products. BLS responded quickly to these requests by suggesting and implementing colour changes on the beams. This resulted in black beams with red accents to clearly highlight the columns and safety products. Additionally, BLS built a custom picking station, called Prepick, with mesh beam shelves and dividers to handle boxes and facilitate the work of pickers.

For Elgiganten, it was crucial to find the best supplier for protection solutions and to minimise transportation distances by choosing a local supplier. Throughout the project, they maintained close and effective communication with BLS, which was greatly appreciated by Elgiganten.

During the project with Elgiganten, several specific challenges arose that required creative solutions:

  1. Adaptation of pallet spaces: One of the biggest challenges was adapting the 25,000 pallet spaces to meet Elgiganten's specific needs. BLS addressed this by equipping all columns with glide protection to prevent pallets from entering the rear column and to protect the first horizontal and diagonal beams. Additionally, the columns were designed with a joint at 1.2 metres, which allowed for the replacement of the lowest column in the event of a collision, without the need to replace the entire column.
  2. Colour coding of protection and safety products: During the project, Elgiganten expressed a desire for clear colour coding of protection and safety products to enhance safety and clarity within the warehouse. BLS responded to this by proposing and implementing colour changes on the beams, resulting in black beams with red painted details.
  3. Efficient handling of boxes: To ease the work for pickers, BLS built a custom picking station called Prepick, with mesh beam shelving and dividers. This clearly indicated where boxes should be placed and retrieved, improving efficiency and reducing the risk of errors.
  4. Environmental considerations and local supplier: Another challenge was minimising the environmental impact by choosing a local supplier. By collaborating with BLS, a local supplier, Elgiganten was able to reduce transportation distances, thereby minimising its environmental impact. The close communication and collaboration also contributed to the smooth and successful completion of the project.

These challenges and their solutions highlight the importance of flexibility, creativity, and close collaboration in achieving success in complex projects.
